How Do Air Conditioners Work?

We all know that our AC unit cools our home on hot summer days, but do you really know just how air conditioners work? Air conditioners are complex pieces of equipment that involve several parts working together to deliver that refreshing, cool air to our homes. If you find yourself asking, “How do air conditioners work?” you’re not alone. Read on for a basic overview of how your air conditioner does its job!

How Air Conditioners Work: The Basics

Air conditioners function by removing heat from the air in your home using three main parts: The compressor, the condenser and the evaporator. These work together to move heat outdoors and blow cooler air in. The compressor and the condenser are located in the unit outside your house. The evaporator is located inside your home, usually as part of your furnace and heating system.

Your air conditioner works by pulling hot air in, moving it over the cold coils, which turn the moist air into cool air by absorbing heat. This cooled air is blown into your home, lowering the ambient temperature. Your air conditioner constantly cycles refrigerant through a closed system of lines, travelling from the indoor unit to the outdoor unit and back again.

Refrigerant

The refrigerant is the key component when it comes to cooling air and making your air conditioner work. Refrigerant changes from a liquid to gas state as it collects heat from inside your home and transfers it to the outdoors. The refrigerant travels through the compressor, starting as a warm vapor and eventually becoming a liquid as it makes its way to the condenser. Next, the refrigerant travels to the evaporator located at your furnace. Here, it cools the hot air in your home as it blows across the evaporator coil. The result is comfortable, cooled air in your home!
